Mississippi PDO

The Prescription Drug Overdose (PDO) program is led by the Mississippi Public Health Institute (MSPHI). It works to reduce opioid overdose deaths through naloxone (NARCAN) education, distribution, and utilization, with trainings delivered statewide by MSPHI and the Mississippi Center for Emergency Services (UMMC/MCES).

Program goals
  • Naloxone education & distribution — equip first-responders and communities with naloxone kits and the knowledge to use them, prioritizing High-Need Communities.
  • Education & training program — deliver overdose-response trainings with pre/post surveys measuring knowledge change.
What's in this dashboard
  • Training evaluation — participants, knowledge change and satisfaction from the pre/post training surveys (Participants, Knowledge Change and Satisfaction tabs).
  • Map — counties served by training participants and county overdose ED-visit rates, plus training venues and the Gulf Coast naloxone vending machines.
  • Overdose trends — statewide nonfatal overdose surveillance (CDC DOSE) and provisional overdose deaths (CDC NCHS VSRR), for context around the grant work.

Shaded by the number of participants trained that day, both trainers combined.

Self-rated knowledge before and after the Narcan training (pre/post survey).

The five-point scale is collapsed to lower knowledge (not at all / to a small degree / somewhat) and higher knowledge (to a large degree / completely).

  • Nonfatal overdoses — CDC DOSE. The Drug Overdose Surveillance and Epidemiology system counts suspected nonfatal overdose encounters. Syndromic surveillance reports emergency-department visits as a rate per 10,000 visits; the discharge data reports annual rates per 100,000 residents from billing records. Cells with too few encounters, or unstable rates, are suppressed by CDC.
  • Fatal overdoses by county — CDC WONDER. Provisional mortality for drug-induced underlying causes.
  • Fatal overdoses statewide — CDC NCHS VSRR. The Vital Statistics Rapid Release series reports provisional drug-overdose death counts. Every value is a 12-month-ending total. Provisional counts are revised as death certificates are completed.

Overdose deaths are counts, not rates, and drug classes overlap: a death involving both fentanyl and cocaine is counted in each.
